Worm composting and I need help going bigger!?
I have seen composting bins on the internet and I see they have many tiers to them. What are in the tiers and why are there so many? I see some with like food on the top two layers and then what looks like dirt or compost and then the compost tea at the bottom. I was thinking about maybe buying something cheap like plastic drawers and doing the same thing with the levels. How do these levels work? What separates them? Do worms travel throughout the levels? Is there a site that shows me something that shows the levels in details and their parts and sizes? Right now I have just a simple bin of worms and they seem to be doing just great! I want to go bigger, vertically though. Any help?
The biggest success of the stacked worm bins (like the worm factory) is the ability for the worms to migrate up through the grid in the bottom of each tray and separate them from the finished compost. You could possibly drill holes but they must be big enough for the worms to travel through but small enough where the compost on the next level doesn’t fall through. The capacity of the worm factory is 13 pounds of food per tray. If you buy a 5 tray you have a large capacity to work with. Doing it yourself will be a lot of trial and error. I guess it comes down to how much your time is worth. I have a worm factory at home and it is low maintenance and designed to do what i need it to do.
