A project of the California Council for the Humanities, the collection seeks to generate discussion of the human realities at work in the most populous, most ethnically diverse state in the nation. The 25 stories show characters who love the idea of California and characters who struggle with living there. The authors include John Steinbeck, Joan Didion, Richard Rodriguez, and Maxine Hong Kingston. Each chapter opens with a small b&w photo and brief biography of the author. The volume is indexed only by author`s name, but an "alternate" table of contents divides the pieces thematically. Annotation )2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

The Other California

The Other California

$15.15

This expanded edition of The Other California, originally published in 1990, contains nineteen essays (six of them new to this collection) on the landscape, literature, and life in the Great Central Valley of California. The Valley, a vast, flat patchwork of fields and orchards, has become the richest farming region in the history of the world. It also has a rich literary tradition: William Saroyan, Joan Didion, William Everson, Maxine Hong Kingston, Gary Soto, and Richard Rodriguez were all raised in this agricultural heartland. Haslam's collection represents the experience of living in the Valley through a variety of writings; some are personal, some regional, others literary. Many of these essays were originally published in national magazines; as a group, they offer readers a fine collection of writings on the landscape and literature of California's Great Central Valley.

Alta California (Hardcover)

Spanish California–with its diverse mix of Indians, soldiers, settlers, and missionaries–provides a fascinating site for the investigation of individual and collective identity in colonial America. Through innovative methodologies and extensive archival research, the nine essays in this volume reshape our understanding of how people in the northernmost Spanish Borderlands viewed themselves and remade their worlds. Essays examine Franciscan identity and missionary tactics in California, Sonora, and the Sierra Gorda; Spanish and Mexican settlers` identity as revealed in the life of Pablo Tac, among the most literate of Alta California`s Indians; and mission choral guilds. The last section of the book turns to the historiography of the Spanish Borderlands as it has developed over the last century in North America as well as in Spain.

Reflections on the University of California (Hardcover)

Reflections on the University of California (Hardcover)

$42

These invaluable essays offer an insider`s perspective on three decades at a major American university during a time of political turmoil. Neil J. Smelser, who spent thirty-six distinguished years as a professor of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, sheds new light on a full range of the issues that dominated virtually all institutions of higher learning during the second half of the twentieth century. In lucid and insightful prose, Smelser considers student activism-in particular the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley-political surprises, affirmative action, multi-culturalism and the culture wars, university governance, graduate education, lower-division education, and intercollegiate athletics. As one of the leading sociologists of his generation, Smelser is uniquely qualified to convey and analyze the complexities of administrating a first-rate and very large university as it encounters a highly politicized environment. This book also provides a wealth of sociological observations and contributes not only to the reader`s understanding of Berkeley`s history, but how that history fits into the broader context of higher education.
